A Parent’s Guide to Measuring Little Feet

A Parent’s Guide to Measuring Little Feet

Finding the right shoe size for a growing child can feel like a moving target. Since those tiny toes don't stay the same size for long, getting an accurate measurement is the secret to avoiding "it’s too tight!" meltdowns and unnecessary returns.

Here is everything you need to know to get the perfect measurement from the comfort of your home.

Step 1: Get the Length

To use our Master Size Chart or reach out for a Virtual Fitting, you’ll need an accurate measurement of your child’s foot length. Here are the two easiest ways to do it:

  • The Wall Method (Most Accurate): Have your child stand up straight with their heel against a wall or baseboard. Use a ruler or tape measure to find the distance from the wall to the tip of their longest toe.
  • The Trace Method: Have your child stand on a piece of paper. Trace around the foot (keep the pen vertical!), then measure the distance from the center of the heel to the tip of the big toe.

Pro Tip: Always measure both feet. It is very common for one foot to be slightly larger than the other; always size for the larger foot!

Step 2: The "Room to Grow" Rule

A common mistake is buying the exact size the foot measures. For healthy foot development and comfort, kids need a bit of "wiggle room."

  • The 1cm Rule: Generally, you should look for a shoe that is 0.5 to 1 full size larger than the measurement.
  • Space for Toes: Aim for about 1cm (or roughly 0.5 inches) of space between the end of the toe and the front of the shoe.
